The festival is held at Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki-shi

The festival takes place annually on the first Sunday of April. The matsuri’s origins come from the ancient Japanese tradition of worshipping happy marriages and fertility, and most recently a way to teach people about STIs and STDs.

In the past, the Kanamara Matsuri served something of a divine purpose for the locals, prostitutes, and visitors that paid their respects to the gods. In doing so, they prayed for conception, safe childbirth, protection from diseases, and the general happiness and welfare of the family.

However, when I arrived at the venue. I did not get the original purpose of the festival. The matsuri is just a penis festival after all. There are so many penis costumes, penis candies, penis floats, and other sexual organs at the Shrine.
