Turkish defence minister Fikri İsik revealed on 14 July that Turkish, French, and Italian companies have signed a preliminary deal to develop Turkey’s national missile defence systems while Turkish plans to buy Russian S-400 missiles have been progressing.

Turkish companies will work with the Franco-Italian Eurosam consortium to develop the missiles, İsik said in a speech he made at a Bastille Day reception at the French embassy in Ankara.

“Turkish, French, and Italian companies will work together to define, develop, and produce an air and missile defence system that will meet the requirements of all three countries,” he noted.

İsik distinguished Turkish agreement with fellow NATO members France and Italy from Turkey’s plans to buy Russian S-400s.
